Yale University School of Medicine (YSM)

The Challenge

YSM is known throughout the world as one of the leading centers for biomedical research and education. Founded in 1810, its faculty includes some of the world's most respected scholars in medicine and biomedical science. In the early 1990's the school of medicine was seeing an influx of homeless and mentally ill patients in the emergency room and had no real training to deal with this population. The school enlisted Robert Galinsky to improve the effectiveness of the student's communications and interactions with this unpredictable population.

The Application

Robert Galinsky examined a multitude of situations and issues that the students were experiencing and created a session that included role play based on both doctor patient protocol, and person to person decency. The session yielded not only tangible techniques but also breakthroughs that revealed what students already knew about their capabilities, but just were not ready to trust.

Quote

"This session gave me not only the confidence and some techniques to deal with unexpected behaviors, but also reaffirmed to me that dealing with the mentally ill is all about listening, being aware and not pre-judging; just like I would treat anyone." Ryan Coles, student pursuing Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree
